The theme was a fundraiser for a new skatepark, last Saturday night was the time, Asbury, NJ was the place, and sunset was the hour when the turn-of-the-century carousel building – was transformed into a screening room. Around 200 people crowded in to fill the 100-seat makeshift theater, and another hundred eager skate devotees hugged the circular glass walls in the ‘standing room only’ section as the long-awaited presentation of “Made In Venice” the movie began.
Mostly everyone was waiting for Jesse Martinez – street skate legend who flew in for the event– to say a few words and get the movie going. And so he did… as the first screening of Made In Venice played to a crowd that covered every demographic. At the film’s end, the reviews came in; one 9-year old boy shouted, “I loved it!” while another skater offered this comment, “Tonight I was truly made thankful I grew up skateboarding.”
